Our Place In Our Families

Murad, the hero of Warlord Unarmed, is one of three rather overachieving brothers. In this scene, he explains to Gale, his curvaceous little bounty hunter, why he is always laughing and cracking jokes.

“You look very tough.” She huddled against him, the body armor forming a frustrating barrier between her curves and his muscle. “Except when you smile.”

“And I smile often.” The escape pod shook violently, the objects around them bumping against Murad. He gritted his teeth and held onto Gale tighter. Will we survive this descent? “Too often according to my brothers. They claim I’m never serious.”

“But that’s an act, isn’t it?” she whispered.

“It started as an act,” Murad confessed, laughter being his way to gain attention in a family dominated by Berke, the leader, and Khan, the warrior. “Now it’s a habit, a way to cope.” With loss, with loneliness, with life.

I understand how Murad feels. I’m one of six kids and we all jostled to claim our roles within the family. I ended up being the leader, making most of the decisions, which sounds like a great role except none of the choices pleased everyone. Someone was always upset with me.

My eldest brother was the creative one. Because this was his role, I felt a bit guilty about writing. I’d write in secret, in my diaries. Eventually I wrote for a newspaper. My brother was offered that opportunity also but he turned it down, stating it wasn’t creative enough for him. It took me years to ‘come out’ to him about my romance writing but when I did, he was completely cool about it and very supportive.
