This week for My Sexy Saturday, I’m sharing seven paragraphs from Darkness Rising, part of the Shifters Gone Alpha shapeshifter romance boxed set released this week. Antoine is a sculptor who’s fascinated by a poet who arrives at his art colony.

When he woke the next evening, he knew she’d arrived. He sensed her presence in the castle, something that attracted him before he’d even left his room. Cameron would have already given her a tour and brought her to her room. Antoine took extra care as he dressed for dinner, stifling his nerves. He wore his usual dark attire, black pants and long-sleeved button-down shirt, and then walked up to the dining room.

When he saw Savannah seated at the table, he inhaled sharply. Online photos of her didn’t do her justice. Her hair was far more lustrous, set in large curls. Her blue-gray eyes stared at him in a way that left him at a loss for words. And her scent, mon dieu, it left him speechless. Beyond a light floral perfume, a feminine scent made every sense in him roar vividly to life.

He regained his bearing and strode over to welcome her. “Savannah, I presume. I’m Antoine.” He took her hand and kissed it. That gesture was a terrible mistake—both bloodlust and physical lust almost overcame him. In his young vampire years, he wouldn’t have been able to overcome a pull so powerful, but he’d mastered self-control over the years and stifled the urges.

Her bottom lip trembled slightly before she spoke. Did he affect her a fraction as she did to him?

“Antoine, it’s a pleasure.”

The shape of her lips captivated him. As a sculptor, could he ever catch such soft, sensuous curves in something as hard as a marble statue?

Something about her affected him, some sort of magnetic life force that drew him in. The pull to her was deep and unexpected. He kept romantic entanglements out of his life at the colony. It wasn’t suitable for a proprietor to seduce the residents.

Happy Saturday! I’m enjoying my second piping hot cup of coffee after getting up early and reading. Hope the weekend is filled with books and caffeine for you as well–two of my favorite things, especially together!

Today I’m sharing seven paragraphs from Knights of Stone, which is my novella in the Highland Shifters boxed set. I am thrilled to be part of this set with such talented authors. It has shot up the charts, is #1 in many Amazon categories, and is in the Amazon top 50 right now. It has over 70 five star reviews already and readers love it. Excerpt from Knights of Stone by Lisa Carlisle

Five torches blazed on the stage all at once, lit by an unseen force. The audience erupted in cheers as the dancing lights from the flickering fire basked the statues. The flames lowered, casting the gargoyles in an eerie, almost reverent glow.

Movement. So slight, Kayla wondered if it was simply a play of light and shadows in her anticipation for the change. She fixed her gaze on the statue in front of her, the one she’d gravitated to each time she’d had snuck out to see the show. Its massive gray form stood straight on two legs built for sturdiness. Its chest jutted out proudly. Gray wings with detailed feathers etched in the stone arched from a point below its shoulder blades. Eyes cast straight ahead on a face that appeared to be a mixture of canine and lion. Its right hand twitched, so slightly she would have missed it if she hadn’t stared so intently. Then a clawed foot inched forward.

Murmurs of astonishment burst from the crowd as the transformation began. Their cries of fervor grew louder as the monstrous statues transformed into taller, slimmer figures with the bronzed skin of warriors who battled under the midday sun. The tartan fabric fell over their thighs as they stood erect, covering their nudity.

Kayla barely blinked, mesmerized as always, as the statue before her stood to full height, taking on the form of a human male, but with beautiful raven wings. Hair just as black snaked rebelliously past his chin. The stony eyes flickered with animation, turning to a mossy green. His deep gaze seared the audience, seeming to burn anything in the path. When he found Kayla, he stopped.

His expression was unreadable, but the intensity in his unblinking eyes made her swallow. She froze under the scrutiny as if hypnotized, unable to break eye contact. Her stomach lurched, heart pounded, and every muscle in her body tightened, fueled with blood now scorching through her veins. His penetrating appraisal affected her so. When his eyes took on a smoldering glint, her skin tingled and a red-hot awareness grew between her thighs.

He broke the stare and continued to assess the audience. She gasped, not realizing she had been holding her breath, and panted while she tried to breathe at a normal rate. He turned on robust legs and strode to a guitar stand. She tore her eyes from him to note the other gargoyles. They, too, had shifted into the form of striking males. One had black hair draped further down his back, one had long blond hair, and two had reddish-brown hair—one wavy and shaggy, the other straight. They took their place at other  instruments. She sought the guitarist again and caught the first sound of the pick striking the strings. On hearing the guitar projected through the amp, the crowd roared again, pressing Kayla forward.

The freak show was about to begin.

“You did a selfless thing.”

Josephine kept her stare on Susie as agony swelled in her breast, knowing this was the last time she’d ever see her or anything from her old life again. She couldn’t breathe. Blinking rapidly, Josephine managed to sound calm and unmoved. “You think so?”

“Of course.” Julio Alberto waited until Susie went inside the small house before instructing the driver to return to the airport.

“Will Susie get in trouble with the police?”

“Why?”

“Two girls end up…you know…and are last seen with her.”

“She’ll be fine.” He leaned over and whispered, “The driver is like me. You don’t need to speak in code.”

Josephine’s gaze flew to the stranger. She was surprised when he kept his attention on the road.

“Marco works for me, Josephine. He was with us when I met you here, in Rio, and now.”

“Ah.” There was nothing more to say. Josephine leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes.

It’s over.

“No, my little kitty. It’s not over.”

Josephine gasped. Her eyes flew open. It wasn’t a coincidence. He’d been inside her mind from the beginning.

“It’s far from over.” Julio Alberto ran the back of his fingers against her colorless cheek. “I thought your love cheap, easy to buy, and easier to forget. Was I wrong?”

Blackness suffocated her heart. Josephine managed to say through numb lips, “No, you were right. You were right about me all along.”

His warm smile unfurled, washing over Josephine in an attempt to stem the terror clogging her mind.

“We’ll see, my little kitty. We will see.”

Over twenty years had passed since that fateful night. Josephine quickly learned the men she had called monsters were beings known as vampires. She also learned vampires were but one of many more preternatural species that had been walking the earth since time memorial.

Beauty, supremacy, and material wealth were these creatures birthright. Such powers naturally extended to Halfbloods, like Julio Alberto, which in turn favored their closest companions.

As a result, Josephine had only aged the equivalent of two human days in the following decades. Kept on a steady diet of Julio Alberto’s blood, she would be a young woman for a very, very long time. Meaning Julio Alberto had virtually all the time in the world to divine infinite ways of tormenting Josephine if he so chose.

She shifted, feeling the hard bite of the wooden chair beneath her legs. The ebony scarf kept her blind. The scarlet one kept her wrists immobile. Naked, but not necessarily helpless, she waited for Julio Alberto to speak and proceed with whatever devilry he had planned.

Maybe I finally made him angry enough to end me? It wouldn’t surprise me. Then he could find someone more docile and eager to please. Not a nasty tempered bitch like myself.

Josephine sensed him circling her. Occasionally he’d reach out and touch her hair, mouth, thighs, and the part of her he owned between those open thighs.

“I tell you this is getting aggravating, Josephine. All these years later and you still carry these crazy thoughts around in your head, querida.”

“I can’t help it.”

“Yes, you can. You just choose not to at the moment because it’s easier.”

“It’s not—”

“Hush. Why do you think you’re still here?”

“I don’t know.”

He slapped her sex. “Don’t be tiresome, querida. Remember who you are talking to. We have some variation of this conversation every year on this night. I could set my watch by it. While I am a patient man, even this could wear down a saint’s soul. Let’s try a bit a variety this time. Let’s go for the complete truth, my little kitty.”

Josephine bit back a feral moan. “Tell me what you want me to say, Julio Alberto.”

“Always quick to play the whore, eh?”

She felt him crouch before her. She lifted her head high. “I’m not playing. It’s who I am, baby.”

 

“Liar. You’re no more whore than I am. You never were a true whore, Josephine, no matter how much you want to think otherwise.” Julio Alberto cupped her knees. “You know what I want from you.”

“These guys are awesome,” Krystal shouted over the music. “Impossible not to have a good time at their shows.”

“Glad I brought you,” Lina replied. “I doubt this would be Brett’s scene.”

They danced and sang along for several songs until the singer announced, “We’re going to take a break. Get a drink, take a piss, and get ready for the second part of the show, which will blow away the first.”

Lina and Krystal were among the first to get to the women’s room. By the time they came out, a line was forming out the door.

“Drink?” Krystal suggested.

“Yeah, let me think. What do I want?” She glanced up at the bar. “Oh, my God.” She turned away and looked up to the ceiling, which had dozens of rubber bats hanging from the rafters. “Oh, God. Oh, God.”

Krystal turned to her, perplexed. “What?”

“My ex is here.”

Krystal scanned the room. “Who? Where?”

“The tall one at the bar. Black hair, black shirt. Tattooed arms.”

“The guy standing so straight like he has a rod up his back?”

“Yes. He can’t help it. He’s a Marine.”

Krystal’s mouth became a perfect O. “Holy shit. The one you were crazy about?”

Lina couldn’t respond so she nodded, unable to tear her eyes from him. Three years had passed, but he appeared as young and as vibrant as when he was a teenager. His black hair was shorter than when they’d first started dating, but not as close cut as while enlisted in the Marines.

His eyes still conveyed a sense of amusement and burned with an intensity that could render women speechless, including her when they’d first met at a club like this one. His body was leaner than when she’d last seen him; he’d lost some weight that further defined his muscles. He resembled a boxer more than a bodybuilder. The whole package was one she’d never been able to resist. A sucker for dark, brooding Italian boys, he captured it so well he should have been on tourist brochures. It would get her on the first flight to Italy.

Krystal brought her back to earth. “Are you going to say hi to him?”

Lina’s mind scrambled. “I don’t know what to do.”

He must have felt her eyes staring as he turned her way and caught her eye. She froze, unable to break the stare.

“Looks like he knows you’re here now.”

“Uh, ah, um…”

Krystal nudged her arm. “Snap out of it, Lina. No matter what happened between you, he’s still just a guy. It was a long time ago, and you’ve moved on. You’re a strong, confident woman. Don’t let that hot shit with a poker up his ass undermine that.”

Lina faced Krystal. “You’re right. It’s—unexpected. Last I heard he was over in Afghanistan.”

“And now he’s coming your way.”
